Behind the Scenes: How We Craft a Rattan Lamp Step by Step

 Why Handmade Matters

In a world dominated by mass production, handmade craftsmanship offers something deeply personal. A handwoven rattan lamp isn’t just another item on a shelf—it’s a work of care, tradition, and patience. Each piece carries the soul of the artisan who created it.

This article takes you behind the scenes of how we craft each rattan lamp, step by step.

Step One: Material Selection – Choosing the Perfect Rattan

Everything begins with selecting the right raw materials. We source premium-quality natural rattan primarily from Indonesia and Malaysia. These tropical vines are known for their:

Flexibility – ideal for shaping and bending.

Durability – for long-lasting structure and wear resistance.

Beautiful texture – with a naturally smooth, elegant grain.

Before weaving begins, each vine is inspected and sorted by thickness, strength, and visual consistency.

Step Two: Preparation – Soaking, Stripping, and Drying

To make rattan ready for weaving, it must be softened and shaped. Our preparation process includes:

Soaking: Rattan is soaked in water to increase flexibility.

Stripping: The outer skin is carefully removed to reveal the fine inner core.

Air Drying: Strands are dried naturally in open air to maintain their shape and moisture balance.

This stage ensures that the rattan is pliable but strong—ready to be transformed into structure and form.

Step Three: Hand-Weaving – The Soul of the Craft

This is the most time-consuming and creative step. Experienced artisans use nothing but their hands, eyes, and instinct to weave intricate patterns around a mold or frame.

Depending on the design, this process can take anywhere from 2 to 12 hours per lamp.

No machines. No shortcuts.

Each weave is unique, giving every lamp subtle variations in pattern and personality.

This stage also reflects the heritage of generations of rattan weavers—techniques passed down, reinterpreted, and preserved.

Step Four: Shaping & Drying – Locking in the Form

Once woven, the lamp is gently reshaped and reinforced if necessary. Then, it undergoes a final drying stage to harden and fix the structure.

We avoid artificial heating—only natural airflow and sunlight are used to protect the fibers and ensure the form stays stable.

Step Five: Final Touches – Quality Checks and Finishing

Before a lamp is ready to ship, it undergoes multiple quality control steps:

Structural inspection for strength and symmetry.

Trimming of excess fibers for clean lines.

Packaging using eco-friendly materials to prevent damage in transit.

Each lamp is individually wrapped and boxed—never bulk-shipped or compressed—to preserve its handcrafted shape.

Every Lamp, a Story

This is why our customers value our rattan lamps: not just for how they look, but for what they represent. They are:

Made by hand, not machines.

Rooted in tradition, adapted for modern homes.

Crafted slowly, sustainably, and with pride.

When you purchase one, you bring home more than just lighting—you carry a story woven into every strand.
